Xerxes Nabong started and still owns a profitable personal finance company, but as an energetic entrepreneur he wasn’t satisfied with having a ton of free time. So he set out to start another venture. Since Xerxes was an avid traveler he had recently been to quite a few cities. While he was checking out all the cool things to do in these cities, he noticed a lot of them had a new thing called an ‘escape room’. These were places where groups of friends or family would go and essentially be locked in a room with a puzzle to solve – except that the room is the puzzle.

These escape rooms were popping up all over the country, but when Xerxes came home there were none. Xerxes being the consummate entrepreneur sensed an opportunity. So he went out and found a space, set up his escape room, put together some promotional materials and opened for business. The problem was that Xerxes wasn’t going to sit around and manage this business on the day to day. He owned other businesses and of course he loved to travel. Xerxes took his most capable and trustworthy employee and offered her the management position. She was overjoyed, but she was hesitant because she had no management experience.

Xerxes knew that Kirsten would be the right fit for the job, so he set out to find a resource for her to learn on the job. That’s where 1000 Four came in. 1000 Four gave Xerxes and his new manager the ability to learn on the go. When his manager didn’t know how to manage social media accounts – much less how to advertise on social platforms she turned to 1000 Four to look for answers. With the stress of social media off her shoulders for a while, she set her focus on training the other employees on providing the best experience possible for the customer. After all, the customer relied on them to schedule their escape date, explain the puzzle beforehand, provide a few hints along the way, and take pictures for them after they made it out. So Kirsten searched 1000 Four for a guide on training her employees. \Things were going great for Kirsten in managing Xerxes Escape Room, but then she got some frightening news. Another escape room was opening less than a mile away, she was going to have some serious competition. While she didn’t know how to respond, she did know where to turn. 1000 Four was waiting on her with “How to Deal with Competition”. After watching she knew that the best way to respond was to ensure that the Escape Room performed as best it could. So she kept doing her best work and sure enough, they out-worked the competition.

A few years ago, I was invited to sit in on a meeting to discuss how to best help our local economy. Someone in the group mentioned that if the region could just bring in 4 companies with 1000 employees each everything should be great. That didn’t sit well with me. I knew there had to be a better way. I was already helping local entrepreneurs grow their businesses at Hatch, but that comment changed my mindset. I realized that growing 1000 companies to four employees big wouldn’t be as good as their strategy. It would be better. Growing 1000 companies with four employees would be more diverse, more nimble, more grassroots, and more local.
