Top Strategies to Grow Your Email List in 30 days.

You hear marketing experts talk about ways to grow your email list, but typically they don’t get you real tangible ways to do so. In my business and specifically in events, I’ve seen an increasing trend that when I  email rather than tweet, I see a typical 700% difference in sales from email to social posts. Which means, I email a lot more because it produces cash. Just this past week, I tweet an announcement about a new event I am hosting. I had 7 ticket sales, all of which were from an email and zero sales from a post on Twitter and Facebook. Coincidence? You be the judge.

So why should I create an email list?

1. Not impression based like social media is

2. Trackable

3. Educational material that hits every inbox

4. Very specific targeted customer who has opted in for additional material

5. Cheaper than traditional advertising

How should I grow my list?

1. Who is your target?

2. Create content for the target

3. Create opt-in for the target (Mailchimp, AWeber)

4. Deliver the content

5. Go through business cards. Find relevant ones, email that person and see if they are interested in your content, present list opportunity. Ask to opt them in

6. Go to a networking event, present content to those you meet. This blog post explains it even more

7. Produce a webinar or meetup around your content

8. Create a free course

9. Post on your social pages. Ask for intros, shares, rts, etc

10. Post on a LinkedIn group or create a LinkedIn group

11. Launch an auto opt-in link

12. Signup for HARO daily emails. submit info.

13. Incentivize viewers. But not everyone can afford to giveaway thousands of dollars worth of tools. What can you do instead?

I’ve decided to document everything I do to grow a list for the remainder of 2014. And grow my list to 1,000. I current have 70 people on this specific list.

So, where is my list currently and what do I have set up?

1. Start with the Result

Example: I made $10,000 because of this tactic
2. Take to a High Broad Level to hit the masses, general public
3. Tell a specific story about the company, person or product
4. What is the % number of the result
5. How/Why this product/service/Hatch helped
6. Act Now + CTA

How do I currently collect emails?
1. Landing Page opt-in
2. Widget Call To Action
3. Giveaway Signup
Over the next month or so, I will be capturing each and every move I do to collect new emails and then I’m going to share them with you. I’ll be trying new techniques and some old ones as well. My goal is to hit 1,000 by the time the ball drops into 2015.
Update 1: Nov 26, 14
Posted on Facebook, Twitter and emailed out the challenge to the 71 members of the Hatch Weekly Content email group.
Results: 8 new signups; 1 from the opt-in at Hatch and 7 from the giveaway.
Day 1 impressions? Incentivizing is key. Will focus on this for next week. However, will take time off to spend time with family over Thanksgiving. The great thing about the giveaway is that if people share more, they get more opportunities to win. Which means, more people are seeing the prize.
I have also decided to add the giveaway to my email signature to see if that works.
Update 2, December 2 2:31pm: Operation Cards
About a year ago a got a card after meeting with someone and I thought it had a lot of value and high touch customer service. I am attending two networking events this evening and will try to meet with as many people as possible. When I get back, I am going to send them a personal ‘Great to Meet You’ note. Then two days after that, I will send them an email greeting them again with a call to action to sign up for my mailing list. Total cost for the cards $13.78. Manual process yes, but it could net a high return.
Update 3: The key to a networking event is to network. The problem is when you don’t meet new people. Back to the drawing board…
Update 4: Numbers are increases with the Call To Action pop ups that I created. Still a long way to go.
27 signups for giveaway, +11 on the list with a total of +28 total subscribers. Growth is happening, which is great, but it has been far more difficult than expected. In an attempt to make some headlines these last 3 weeks I am going to write some specific posts on growth with strong headlines.
Nov 19: Added a new link to my email signature.
