Opportunities happen every single day, it’s what we do with them that matters. If you’ve been following Hatch for some time, you’ve heard these words spoken from us many times. All too often we hear struggling business owners talk about how if they own had X, everything would be different. The problem with statements like this are that X will never come. You must find the path on your own and go through many struggles to succeed. No matter the size of your business, problems will arise. Again, it’s how you handle these situations that matter.

As you may have seen, if you live in southeastern Virginia, a new business publication, CoVa Biz, launched in early June 2016. And unbeknownst to us, we are on the cover. Seriously, we had no idea until our event coordinator Deany Dormer of Executive Events got a text with a picture of it. She showed us, and we thought they made multiple covers. Nope, just 1 cover and Hatch and several of its companies were featured. But, how did this all come about? We obviously took a picture for the magazine, but how did it all happen?

I got an email from Jim Carroll asking myself and a few others if we knew any businesses that would be a good fit for CoVa Biz. He was asked by the editor, Angela Blue. While I wasn’t directly asked to promote my business Hatch, I took it as an opportunity to. Because, if I didn’t pitch it, it never would have happened.

I reached out to Angela and said:

A few weeks later, Barrett Baker reached out to let me know Hatch would be featured in the inaugural edition of CoVa Biz, score! Remember, you miss every shot you don’t take. I set up a call with Barrett and discussed Hatch and its growth along with some challenges throughout the years being in business. I was then able to supply Barrett with a list of additional companies that would be a good fit for upcoming issues.

I was then notified that a photographer would come out and take a few pictures. If you’ve ever been to Hatch, you know that every day if different and there are always companies in and out of the office. We took the pictures and had fun with it, I held up Ashebrooke, we used the championship belt and even made a few serious poses. We didn’t think anything of it at the time and went on with our day. Fast forward a month, Deany gets a text with us on it. It looks like a cover, but we don’t believe it. She texts back, is this the cover? And it was confirmed! Wow, we went from no interview to the cover, by taking advantage of an opportunity.

We all ask or pray for opportunities, but we don’t always take advantage when they come our way. Next time something appears to be an opportunity, raise your hand.
